What your free SSL certificate actually includes

A free SSL certificate ships with every AheadHost plan, on every domain you point at your account, at no extra charge. We use Let’s Encrypt through cPanel AutoSSL: it issues automatically, renews itself every 90 days, and runs TLS 1.3 with OCSP stapling. You install nothing, copy no private keys, and never pay per domain.

  • Free Let’s Encrypt DV certificates on every shared and VPS account.
  • AutoSSL requests, installs, and renews certificates with no manual step from you.
  • TLS 1.3 and OCSP stapling on by default, so handshakes are fast.
  • Every owned domain covered — addon domains, subdomains, and parked domains, with no per-domain fee.
  • Auto-renew every 90 days, well before expiry, so you never see a “your connection is not private” warning.

That last point is where cheaper hosts fall apart: the certificate is free, but renewal breaks or only the primary domain is covered. AutoSSL handles all of it in the background.

Free SSL is included on every plan

Free AutoSSL is not a tier you upgrade into. It is standard across the board, and the price you sign up at is the price you renew at — no introductory SSL trick, no year-two surprise.

  • Basic — $36/year: free AutoSSL, primary plus addon domains, auto-renew every 90 days.
  • Blogger — $84/year: free AutoSSL, more addon domains covered, same automatic renewal.
  • Business Pro — $120/year: free AutoSSL across all hosted domains, auto-renew every 90 days.

Every VPS account gets the same free AutoSSL with cPanel, across all hosted domains. See the full shared cPanel hosting plans for the complete feature grid, and our uptime guarantee for the reliability behind it.

How Let's Encrypt AutoSSL works on our servers

Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, nonprofit certificate authority trusted by every major browser, and cPanel’s AutoSSL is the glue that talks to it for you. After you point a domain at your account, AutoSSL detects it, completes the domain-validation challenge, installs the certificate, and schedules renewal — usually within an hour of the domain going live.

Because these are Domain Validation (DV) certificates, validation only checks that you control the domain: no paperwork, no phone call, no business filing. For a blog, portfolio, small business site, or WordPress install, that is exactly the trust visitors expect. The padlock looks identical to one backed by a pricey certificate — browsers stopped showing special green bars years ago. On the server side, TLS 1.3 cuts the handshake to a single round trip and OCSP stapling attaches a recent revocation status to the handshake, so the visitor’s browser skips a slow separate call to the CA.

When free DV is right, and when you need paid

For the large majority of sites, a free Let’s Encrypt DV certificate is the correct choice, not a compromise. Blogs, brochure sites, portfolios, small stores, and WordPress projects almost never need more than DV — the encryption is identical to paid certificates, and the only thing you give up is identity vetting most visitors never look at. If you are spinning up a WordPress site, free AutoSSL covers you from the first page load.

A paid Organization Validation (OV), Extended Validation (EV), or wildcard certificate genuinely earns its cost in a narrow set of cases: when a contract or audit specifically requires OV or EV vetting, when you need a single wildcard for many dynamic subdomains, or when you want a stated certificate warranty for liability. Paid certificates on our network come from Sectigo; Let’s Encrypt does not carry a warranty. If any of those describe you, our SSL certificates page covers the paid Sectigo DV, OV, EV, wildcard, and multi-domain options.

Migrate your SSL for free, too

Moving from another host? Our free migration brings your site over, and AutoSSL re-issues a fresh free SSL certificate on our servers automatically once the domain resolves to your new account. You export nothing SSL-related — there is no certificate file to carry across and no private key to copy over. The common pattern from sign-ups migrating off budget hosts is relief that the SSL just works again without a support ticket, and without a per-domain renewal invoice showing up a year later.

If you are unsure whether a domain will validate cleanly, point it at your account first and let AutoSSL run. If issuance is slow, a stray CAA record or lingering DNS from the old host is the usual culprit, and our support team can clear it quickly. Either way, the certificate costs nothing on our network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Free AutoSSL backed by Let’s Encrypt is included on every plan at no charge for as long as you host with us. There is no trial period and no per-domain fee, and certificates auto-renew every 90 days for free.

AutoSSL is the cPanel feature that requests, installs, and renews Let’s Encrypt certificates for you. You don’t set it up — it detects your domains and handles everything in the background, usually within an hour of a domain pointing at your account.

Yes. Every domain you own and host on your account is covered, including addon domains, subdomains, and parked domains, with no extra charge. Higher plans simply allow more addon domains.

Let’s Encrypt certificates are valid for 90 days by design. AutoSSL re-issues them automatically before they expire, so you never see a browser warning and never have to lift a finger.

The encryption is identical. A free DV certificate and a paid DV, OV, or EV certificate all protect traffic to the same standard. The difference is the level of identity vetting the certificate authority performs, not the strength of the connection.

Buy a paid certificate when a contract or audit requires OV or EV vetting, when you need a single wildcard for many dynamic subdomains, or when you want a stated certificate warranty. For most sites the free certificate is the right choice. See our SSL certificates page for paid Sectigo options.

Yes. Both should run over HTTPS. Free AutoSSL covers a WordPress site from the first page load, and it covers WooCommerce checkout pages too. Search engines and browsers both expect HTTPS now.

No. After your domain points to us, AutoSSL issues a fresh certificate automatically. You don’t migrate any certificate files — our free migration handles the site move, and the SSL re-issues itself on our end.
